About Mitra Rangarajan

Mitra Rangarajan, MSN, ANP-BC, MPH, CDE, MS (RD) has decades of experience in healthcare particularly in Nutrition, Gastroenterology, Primary Care/Diabetes Management and Public Health. She practices in Baltimore, Maryland.

Mitra is one of the few people in the world who is cross-trained and certified in three interrelated, interconnected and intertwined disciplines which are: Nutrition, Diabetes Management, and Clinical Medicine/GI. She is affiliated with organizations including American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), The Association of Diabetes Educators (ADE), International Council of Nurses (ICN) / International Nurse Practitioner (INP), American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), and American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

As an expert in GI Nutrition, Mitra Rangarajan has seen firsthand that this area is often misunderstood by the average person. It is important to fully comprehend the many aspects that factor into proper GI nutrition: food and medication interactions; herbs and their interactions with medication and the hormones your body produces; medications, food and its interactions with the gut microbiota.

Without proper guidance to navigate the sea of information (and misinformation) that is available online, the public will be put in danger. Mitra created this blog in part to break down specific topics in GI nutrition for everyone.

The GI tract is vital to our survival. It has to assimilate and digest the contents we eat to keep us healthy and alive. As a Nurse Practitioner, Mitra has provided episodic service, chronic care service, and specialty care in Gastroenterology (amongst other branches of medicine) at numerous health centers. Some of the subsects of GI which interest her most are:

N

GI Nutrition and malignancy

N

GI Nutrition and Pancreatitis – Chronic and acute

N

GI Nutrition and Obesity

N

GI Nutrition and Role of Gut Microbiome in IBD, IBS, Obesity and Liver Disease

N

GI Nutrition and GI Motility Disorders

N

GI Nutrition and Liver and Gallbladder Disease

Additionally, a personal experience augmented Mitra’s interest in GI nutrition: when her own daughter was an infant, she developed a GI infection, which for months, no one could solve or control except her mother. The medical team was amazed at how Mitra had kept her hydrated despite the fluid loss. The baby went from 99th percentile to 5th percentile on the growth chart. While the medical team was trying to find the next antibiotic and preparing the infant for invasive procedures, Mitra requested they discontinue her antibiotic and cancel any plans for invasive procedures.  She took control of the baby’s treatment. She carefully formulated and provided nutrition intervention for the baby, which miraculously put her into a path to recovery. The medical team was stunned. This experience exemplifies Mitra’s careful and comprehensive approach to GI nutrition.

Mitra Rangarajan attended Johns Hopkins University, trained at Hopkins and worked at Johns Hopkins Medicine for decades garnering unparallelled experience. She serves as the United States communications liaison for the International Council of Nurse Practitioners. She is a coauthor on numerous publications, such as GI Nutrition Desk Reference (CRC Press), ADA GI Nutrition Pocket Guide, and Integrative Gastroenterology – Weil Integrative Medicine Library (Oxford Press). She has given international presentations about various aspects of patient safety and the changing landscape of healthcare. She has also appeared in the media to share her health expertise.
